Title
A RESOLUTION ESTABLISHING A MUSEUMS & HERITAGE DEPARTMENT AND AMENDING THE PAY CLASSIFICATION PLAN AUTHORIZING A MUSEUMS & HERITAGE DIRECTOR
Summary
Description of Topic: (who, what, where, when, why and how much)
This agenda item concerns the establishment and classification of a new Museums & Heritage Director position within the City’s organizational structure. The position will lead the newly formed Museums & Heritage Department, which is being established within the General Government umbrella to centralize and strengthen the City’s heritage preservation and public history functions. Currently, museum operations are administered within the Marketing Department, where the focus has traditionally emphasized promotion and tourism-related activities. Those duties will be removed from this new position. The creation of a standalone department and director role reflects a shift toward professional museum administration and long-term heritage stewardship. The Museums & Heritage Director will be responsible for leadership in the areas of heritage preservation, collections management, exhibit planning and development, educational programming, historical research, grant development, and oversight of museum facilities and heritage assets. The position will also guide the interpretation and presentation of the City’s historical narrative across departments and public facilities.
The position is classified at a director/advanced professional level, reflecting the depth of specialization required in museum operations and heritage preservation, as well as its citywide impact and departmental leadership responsibilities. The recommended classification is Pay Grade 210, ensuring competitiveness within the Baldwin County labor market and alignment with other department director roles within the City.
