WHEREAS, at 16 years of age, Florence B. Mathis accepted a teacher position for the African American children living in Miflin, Alabama in 1939, and
WHEREAS, in 1940, Ms. Mathis was a teacher, principal, truant officer, disciplinarian and a community leader, and
WHEREAS, she taught generations of African Americans in Miflin and the Aaronville community while earning her BS and Master's degrees in education, and
