During the June 2, 2014 Work Session the Council had a consensus to approve removing the Eastern Red Cedar a/k/a Foley's Christmas In the Park Christmas Tree or Mrs. Hesse's Christmas Tree, as the Japanese Fir tree planted due east of the Eastern Red Cedar Christmas tree. The Japanese Fir tree is large enough to take over as the City's official Christmas tree.

WHEREAS, in 1998 the City Clerk/Administrator, Perry Wilbourne, requested the Revitalization and Beautification Board to consider making plans to replace the Easter Red Cedar in John B. Foley Park due to its age and decline, and
WHEREAS, that same year the Revitalization and Beautification Board had an Abies Firma (Japanese Fir) tree donated to them by Coastal Woodland and was known to be a slow grower and the only known Fir tree to grow in the Southeast, and
WHEREAS, the Fir tree was dedicated at Arbor Day in 1998 in anticipation that it would take over the duties of the Eastern Red Cedar tree as the City of Foley's Christmas Tree for everyone to enjoy, and
WHEREAS, the time has come to take down the Eastern Red Cedar that has given so many years of joy to the public in standing proudly during the Christmas season dressed in fine array of beautiful ornaments.
