WHEREAS, it is a well-known fact that cancer is an occupational health risk for firefighters and is more prevalent today than ever, and
WHEREAS, Legislative Act #2019-361 was passed by the Alabama Legislature and signed by the Governor in 2019 which requires that municipalities provide specific supplemental cancer insurance coverage by January 1, 2020 for career firefighters who have served 12 consecutive months, and
WHEREAS, the Act requires that a cancer policy is made available to volunteer firefighters who have served 12 consecutive months, and the Foley Fire Department wishes to provide coverage for its eligible Volunteer members, and
WHEREAS, the Alabama League of Municipalities has endorsed the Alabama First Responders Benefits Program (ALFRBP), insured by Hartford Insurance Company, and
WHEREAS, the ALFRBP offers enhanced coverage for all types of cancer, and
WHEREAS, the Foley Fire Department has adequately budgeted $10,000 for this coverage for calendar year 2020 in the FY2020 budget under account #100-2020-5015.
NOW THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED that the City Council of the City of Foley, Alabama, as follows:
SECTION 1: Approves the purchase of an enhanced cancer coverage insurance plan from the Alabama First Responders Benefits Program for all eligible Foley Fire Department Career and Volunteer Firefighters at a cost of $8,181.08 with budgeted funds from account #100-2020-5015.
SECTION 2: This Resolution shall become effective immediately upon its adoption as required by law.
