     WHEREAS, at 16 years of age, Florence B. Mathis accepted a teacher position for the African American children living in Miflin, Alabama in 1939, and

 

WHEREAS, in 1940, Ms. Mathis was a teacher, principal, truant officer, disciplinarian and a community leader, and

 

WHEREAS, she taught generations of African Americans in Miflin and the Aaronville community while earning her BS and Master's degrees in education, and

 

WHEREAS, Ms. Mathis started her career as a young 16 year old teacher in a rural, deprived and depressed one room school house in 1939 and quickly became principal in 1940 and served in that roll until 1967, when the ruling on desegregation forced schools to integrate closing the African American schools.

 

     NOW THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED that the City Council of the City of Foley, Alabama, as follows:

     SECTION 1:     Approves renaming Aaronville Pool Park to Florence B. Mathis Park.

     SECTION 2:     This Resolution shall become effective immediately upon its adoption as required by law.
