WHEREAS, the Aerospace manufacturing sector in the U.S. and the City of Mobile is creating significant employement opportunities, business growth, and manufacturing excellence, and is critical to the nation's military and economic security; and

 

WHEREAS, the expaning industrial operations of Airbus located at the Brookely Industrial Complex are at the very heart of Mobile's aerospace manufacturing growth; and

 

WHEREAS, Airbus has been a member of the business community for more that 15 years with three major facilities and directly employs over 1,250 enigeers and production technicians; and

 

WHEREAS, the $600 million Airbus A320 U.S. manufacturing facilitiy, which opened in 2015, now produces more than four aircraft per month and has delivered over 140 aircraft to U.S. airline customers to date; and

 

WHEREAS, In 2019, Airbus broke ground on a $300 million A220 U.S. manufacturing facility that will assemble the newest Airbus aircraft, the A220, for U.S. airline customers with deliveries beginning in 2020; and

 

WHEREAS, Airbus continues to expand its manufacturing employment foot print in City of Mobile by hiring more than 520 production technicians in 2019, more than doubling the number of its employees in one year (with expected total employee growth of 236% between December 2019 and December 2020); and

 

WHEREAS, the proposed tariffs on imported aircraft components and assemblies from Europe places at risk this significant industrial and employment growth in the City of Mobile;

 

NOW THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED that the City Council of the City of Foley, Alabama, as follows:

SECTION 1: Fully supports the continued manufacturing operations of Airbus at the Brookley Industrial Complex and urges the President of the United States and the United States Trade Representative to continue the current trade policy of not applying tariffs on imported aerospace components and assemblies from Europe, and thereby ensure the continued growth of aerospace manufacturing in the Gulf Coast.

SECTION 2: This resolution shall become effective immediately upon its adoption as required by law.
